The Lake Shawnee Amusement Park

The Lake Shawnee Amusement Park

The Lake Shawnee Amusement Park has seen both accidents and massacres. The site’s creaky wooden swings and rusted Ferris wheel may still be haunted by ghosts, according to current owner Gaylord White.

Gaylord White strolls past a swing ride at the old Lake Shawnee Amusement Park. Once a popular summertime retreat for thousands of coalfield families, the Lake Shawnee Amusement Park is now better known as a purported gathering place for the spirits of the many long-dead souls who once spent their earthly time on this patch of bottomland along the Bluestone River.

It has been decades since the Lake Shawnee Amusement Park buzzed with the laughter of children.

But according to local legend, the park is still a playground for ghosts.

The southern West Virginia park was abandoned in 1966, after the accidental deaths of two of its young patrons. But it seems Lake Shawnee’s haunted history reaches much farther back.

Lake Shawnee Amusement Park in West Virginia, which was shut down in 1966 and belived to be cursed, will open for one week only from October 25th through October 31st.
